I have been a member of the BAA since 1986 and was first elected to the BAA Council in October 2003, having been encouraged by the President’s appeal for more lady members to consider putting their names forward for the Council. I have a BSc Hons degree in Astronomy and Pure Maths from Leicester University and am a Fellow of the RAS. I am a member of a number of Astronomical Societies, including the Astronomy Centre at Todmorden, the Society for Popular Astronomy, and Liverpool Astronomical Society. I also have a day job in the nuclear industry. My main interests currently are: viewing solar eclipses (eight totals and five annulars); general observing that can be done with a small telescope under light-polluted suburban skies (since I live directly between Manchester and Liverpool!); and promoting astronomy to the general public through lectures and advice (eg. to local WI, Rotary, church groups, etc.) and also including badges for Brownies, Scouts and Boys Brigade. I was appointed Editor of the BAA Handbook from the 2006 edition. Having served on the BAA Council for three years, from 2003 to 2006, I stood down for a year, then was recently elected back onto the Council from October 2007. |
