Member of the BAA since 1987. Age 56.
Employed as a “Rocket Scientist” with the Ministry of Defence for 10 years; mathematics teacher and computer science lecturer for 10 years; managing editor of a computer magazine for 16 years; ran own computer network company and retired in 2001.
Member of the Open University Astronomy Club. Member of the CPRE with special interest in light pollution. Built own telescope in 1966 (200mm Newtonian). Interested in “the rapidly changing sky” e.g. eclipses, occultations, transits, comets, asteroids, meteors. Has seen 10 total and 2 annular eclipses and is the "eclipse expert" on the 2006 Ancient World Tours trip to Libya.
Publications include books and guides on "UK Solar Eclipses from 1 to 3000AD" and the “2006 Total Solar Eclipse” Bradt Travel Guide. Appearances on TV and radio, including presenting Sky TV’s total eclipse programme from Cornwall in 1999. Writes regular features for the local paper. Lectures widely to astronomical societies, and other interest groups (e.g. Bletchley Park, WI, local societies). Has a keen interest in visual observation and modern imaging techniques ties in well with a thorough knowledge of computers and networking.
Willing to give talks to astronomy societies and local organisations such as the WI, Hospices, Clubs etc. |
