The Astronomy Section of the Northamptonshire Natural History Society is the oldest and largest astronomical society representing amateur astronomers in the Northampton region. Formed back in 1957, the section meets every second and last Monday at 7:30pm. Such is the reputation of the Section, that it now regularly hosts meetings of the British Astronomical Association and other organisations.
The current president, Nick Hewitt, has served as President of the BAA, Director of the Deep Sky Section and as meetings secretary. Other Society members include Martin Taylor who is a BAA Council member; Tom Boles, also a past president of the BAA and the discoverer of over 100 supernovae and Karen Holland who is the Editor of the BAA Variable Star Section circulars and Secretary of the BAA Radio Astronomy group. Past members include Roy Panther who discovered Comet Panther back in 1980.
The Society is also affiliated to the British Astronomical Association, the Society for Popular Astronomy, and was the first society to join the Federation of Astronomical Societies.
