Asteroid Occultation August 2/3 Print E-mail

petrinaweather_tn.jpg Last week we posted up an alert about a forthcoming favourable asteroid occultation involving the 50-km diameter asteroid, (482) Petrina.  The event will have taken place around 2 am local time early on Friday morning (August 3).  Unfortunately the weather was not kind with plenty of cloud across much of England and Wales as shown in this weather satellite image taken about the time of the occultation.

On this occasion, the star occulted was relatively faint at 11th magnitude and even very thin cloud was sufficient to prevent the event being observed. Indeed, no reports have been received and so we shall have to now await the next favourable opportunity for UK-based observers which will be on September 13 03:44 UT involving the large, almost 200-km diameter asteroid, (120) Lachesis - see prediction at Steve Preston's website:
