Variable Star Section

vss3a_lo.jpgThe Variable Star Section was formed in 1890, the year the BAA was founded, with the aim of collecting and analysing observations of variable stars. The Section is run by a small group of Officers who deal with various aspects separately but meet at intervals to discuss and decide future plans and policy. Feedback to members is through the VSS Circulars published four times a year and through the BAA Journal.

As well as helping to monitor the activity of hundreds of variables and produce their light curves, the VSS database enables the section to supply records to professional and amateur astronomers for analysis. Papers are published in the BAA Journal, the VSS Circulars and elsewhere. Anyone interested in section data for analysis should contact the Director.

The next VSS Meeting will be held at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot, Oxfordshire and the main speaker will be non other than the Directorof the AAVSO, Dr Arne Henden. The title of Arne's talk will be "The Enigmatic V838 Mon". Other speakers include Dr Darren Baskill, Leicester University; Dr Peter Allan, Space Science and Technology Dept, RAL and Dr David Boyd, VSS. Doors will open at approximately 10.30 and the meeting will be scheduled to finish around 17.30. Further details will appear on the web soon. It would be nice if as many members as possible would attend this meeting as it would be good to impress Arne with our commitment.

Some time will be left for short contributions and discussion, and members are invited to bring slides, overheads, videos, disks and/or laptops, as all media can be accommodated. Space is also available for exhibition material and equipment. Please advise the Director if you wish to give a presentation or bring along equipment. Entrance: £5 (booking not required), to include tea, coffee and biscuits.

There will be a small selection of sandwiches and other meals available to purchase on-site during the lunch break.

Full programme to appear soon.

Roger Pickard, Director
