The comets ion tail has faded considerably, but we have 2 well defined dust tails separated by 90 degrees. much like a mirror image. There is a type II dust tail pointing upwards (Eastwards) made from fine dust blown away by solar radiation pressure, and a type III dust tail or “trail” pointing to the right (Northwards) made by coarse dust trailing behind the comets nucleus. The ion tail seems too faint to image with my setup. The type III tail will gradually orientate sunwards and on October 2, when the Earth crosses the comets orbital plane, will become an anti-tail What is interesting is that the intensity of the dust “trail” appears to have increased over the past few weeks presumably due to the better phase angle situation of the dust particles! |
