C/2017 T2 (PANSTARRS) tonight (May 24) from Chelmsford, UK. In addition to the long tail to the west the comet shows a lot of interesting structure in the inner coma. The inset shows the result of subtracting a rotationally symmetric model of the coma centred on the coma photocentre. This removes the general light from the coma and makes subtle features easier to see. The photocentre is indicated by the single black pixel. There is a strong, bright fan to the SW and another fainter fan to the east which curves around back into the tail. These features seem pretty stable and have been around for at least a month. |
