The object designated A/2017 U7 is clearly a comet. After seeing an image taken by Michael Hauss on October 7 and posted on the German comet group page, I (remotely) took a pair of 2-minute images this morning (November 1.42 UT) with the 1.0-meter Las Cumbres Observatory telescope at Siding Spring. The images clearly show a diffuse, relatively condensed coma with a broad, slightly curved 10-arcsecond tail towards the northeast (approximate p.a. 050). In this image, standard orientation (i.e., north up, east to left), approximate size 7 x 5 arcminutes. |
