Widefield view of C/2020 F8 (SWAN) this Morning (May 20) from Chelmsford, UK (latitude 51.7N). The bright star top left is Algol in Perseus. The field is just under 7 degrees across. The comet is now high enough here that it can be seen in a relatively dark sky. I could see it, just, in 8x40 binoculars. I get a magnitude of 7.9 from the green channel of this image but visual observers are seeing it around mag 6 or so. It is definately not the impressive spectacle that we had hoped for. The inset shows the same frames stacked on the comet's motion. It has a field of view of 0.7 deg. |
