The BAA is seeking an Editor for its bi-monthly publication the Journal of the British Astronomical Association, commencing in 2018 October. This is a part-time position requiring approximately 40/50 hours per month, spread unevenly through the bi-monthly schedule. 

Salary: circa £11.5k p.a., negotiable
Contract: Part-time, 40/50 hrs per month (flexible). Initial fixed term contract for three years with extension possible, commencing 2018 October, or earlier by negotiation.
Location: the successful applicant will normally work from home, with occasional travel to the Association’s offices, currently located at Burlington House, Piccadilly, London. Out-of-pocket expenses will be paid for necessary travel.

The Journal of the British Astronomical Association is the main means by which the Association communicates with its members, who are amateur astronomers based in the UK and increasingly also worldwide. It is provided as part of membership either in print or digital form (as PDF). The Journal is published six times a year, and communicates news, articles, members’ observations and refereed scientific papers by amateurs. The current editor is retiring after 25 years in post, and the new editor will have a major influence on the way forward for the publication. The successful candidate will have experience in magazine editing and production, some knowledge and understanding of astronomy and the physical sciences, and be committed to the Association’s objectives of serving the amateur astronomy community. The post holds automatic membership of the BAA Council, and if not already a member of the BAA the postholder will be expected to join the Association and take an active part in its activities and governance.

Role & responsibilities

  • Coordinating the print and online publishing cycle (6 issues per year) and liaising with the printers
  • Managing content
  • Suggesting stories and generating ideas for short articles (refereed papers are received from elsewhere following acceptance by the referees and Council)
  • Editing and improving stories or papers; all authors are amateurs with a wide variety of software and writing skills
  • Preparing page layouts (artwork, design, images) and checking content for accuracy and errors
  • Creating and proofing print-ready copy and uploading to the printers’ system
  • Meeting print deadlines and budget requirements
  • Working with volunteers as part of a Journal team
  • Undertaking other tasks consistent with the role as reasonably required by the Board and Council of the BAA

Skills, competencies and abilities

  • Strong writing/editing/proofreading skills
  • Proven editing and managerial experience, preferably including liaison with printers and other commercial operators
  • Hands-on experience with professional desktop publishing tools such as InDesign and graphics tools such as Photoshop (or similar)
  • Excellent written ability in English
  • An eye for detail along with critical thinking
  • Prioritising and multitasking skills
  • Effective team player
