This image was captured from Centro de Observação Astronómica no Algarve (COAA).  Situated in the hills of Poio, near Portimão in Portugal, and facing south, the observatory has a latitude of 37o11’25”.  Thanks to Dr Bev Ewan-Smith at COAA for helping to capture this image.

All stages of the image processing were carried out with PixInsight.  The 27 x 100-second light frames were calibrated in PixInsight using a ‘Master Dark’, ‘Master Bias’ and ‘Cosmetic Correction’.  The images were also debayered at this stage.

The images were then aligned and integrated in PixInsight to create the single colour image.

Seeing a great spiral galaxy edge on like this emphasises the delicate nature of the galaxy structure.  The relative narrowness of the galaxy disc compared to its diameter is truly remarkable.  The darkness of the dust lanes compared to the brightness of the billions of stars that they also contain is equally remarkable.
