Many designs were considered in the planning, but finally for ease of construction using standard techniques and materials, a twin section roll off roof design (inspired by Harold Powell's design, Chinchilla Qld) was adopted. The observatory was effectively completed in late 1979 and was operational from 1st January 1980 when the optics were installed in the telescopes.
