If the observer can get past Messier 42 in Orion, he or she will find lesser known treasures. This little fella in the neck of the Hunter is worth tracking down. Rather small at 22 x 17" , it is still has a reasonable surface brightness so is not difficult visually. Don't let the magnitude 12 put you off. A small oval ring with enhanced brightness at the long axis points surrounds a 14th magniitude central star. Can you see colour? Try high magification on nights of good seeing (not the case last night!).
