Mars and the Milky Way from South Africa

About this image

This view of the Milky Way and Mars near perihelic opposition was taken when Martin visited the famous Boyden Observatory in South Africa. In addition to using the 13" Clark refractor for Mars, he took a variety of wide angle views of the Milky Way. This is a stack of 10 x 60 sec exposures at ISO 2500 and F/2.5. The images and 10 dark frames were stacked in Deep Sky Stacker, then moved to PhotoShop for final adjustment, which included levels, curves, and unsharp masking. Color and contrast adjustments provide a wide variety of views, some like this, others more subtle. This version is 720 x 551 pixels - the original is 7200x5400.
