Nice pictures. The effect is almost certainly because we are transiting 
the orbital plane at the moment. This is nicely shown by the JPL orbit 
diagram here:

C/2012 S1 (ISON) will do the same thing around about Jan 17 next year 
and we could get an interesting view if it leaves a lot of dust in the 
orbital plane.
