Hi Tony,

I have had problems with Windows 10 being very picky about permissions. Try right clicking on the downloaded msi file and then under the Security tab make sure you have got Full control checked against your name.

Subject: Re: [BAA Comets] comphot

Hi,

It may well be a teaching granny problem. I downloaded the file. I double clicked on it to launch and nothing happened. I also tried a right click on the file and selected Install - again nothing happened. I am fairly new to Windows10 - it came pre-installed on the new observatory computer. There is something nagging in my brain that I had read somewhere that sometimes in W10 you have to change a security setting to allow for certain types of software to be installed, but that is all this "granny" can remember. If it was to switch off Windows Defender then I have already turned that off.

I did go on to download all previous versions of comphot and try to install them. Failed!

If others have installed on W10 then either I am missing something obvious or W10 is not set correctly.

Does the installation modify any registers or similar? If not could someone just send me the programme along with any config files etc. that is required please?

Yours - knocking head against wall,

......................................

After writing the above I decided to see if I could install it on an old laptop that I had accidently upgraded from Windows 8 to 10. At first I did not think that it had been installed, because all searches could not find the programme. I then used Windows Powershell and tried it on a recent 315P. It worked although I do not fully understand some of the output. Astrometrica gave me a magnitude of 17.3 (which I considered a bit on the dim side) and Comphot gave me 6.03!

 10x10 20x20 30x30 40x40 50x50 60x60

12.23 11.61 11.23 10.93 10.69 10.47 # Counts

12.23 11.61 11.24 10.94 10.71 10.50 # Median annuli

Total integrated magnitude: 6.03 (radius 451.2 arcsec)

ICQ: 2017 4 14.89 6.0 15.0

COMPHOT: 1.2.5 2017 04 14.892 6.03 15.04 16.01 24.35 1.61 735.5 0.58 Astrometrica 4.10.0.431 Unknown Unknown 315P.fit

I am not posting any more results anywhere until I have sorted it out and fully understand the output. After looking at the skycheck.jpg I need to learn about sky background correction images as I have not heard about them before.

I still have the problem of finding out what security/installation setting needs changing on my observatory PC so that I can get Comphot running on that. I have checked every setting I can think of. In the meanwhile I will keep on practising with it on other observations.

Best Wishes,

Tony.
