Nice work John.
Monitoring the comet for 3 hours is exactly what is called for.
On this occasion you were just a little too early to catch the rise to maximum, which happened at 2017 05 09.47 +/-0.10.
Good luck in the next 3-7 days.
I estimate we have a 1 in 3 chance of seeing another outburst during this period !

Jean-Francois Soulier observed the comet faint on May 08.40 from Chile.
Has anyone imaged the comet between May 8.4 and May 9.6?
If so then we may be able to narrow down the exact time of this medium-size outburst.

It is now shining at magnitude 14.6R having been detected on May 09.60 as a
highly condensed stellar-looking pseudonucleus.
