Voyager 2 Jupiter Images – Jupiter's limb

Jupiter's limb
A Voyager 2 mosaic showing Jupiter's limb. Here the version with approximately true color and contrast actually looks more interesting/beautiful than the enhanced version because hints of Jupiter's blue sky are visible above Jupiter's limb. At the limb, the blue sky is less conspicuous relative to the cloudtops than in a comparable Voyager 1 mosaic showing the limb. This is probably mainly because of the higher phase angle which in this case results in a higher solar elevation angle at the limb and more brightly lit cloudtops relative to the blue sky than in the more limb-darkened Voyager 1 view. The images used in the mosaic were obtained by Voyager 2 on July 9, 1979 at a range of ~745,000 km from Jupiter's center. The resolution of original data is ~7 km/pixel.

Jupiter's limb (true color)

An approximately true color/contrast version of the mosaic.
