Information provided by the International Occultation Timing Association, European Section (IOTA-ES) indicates that an asteroid occultation is predicted to cross southern / central England early on Friday, 2007 August 03 at 01:09-01:14 UT (i.e. about 2.11 am local time on Thursday night / Friday morning).
The shadow track of the asteroid, (482) Petrina, is expected to be
about 50 km across. The predicted path of the shadow and other
information is available on Steve Preston's website at:
http://asteroidoccultation.com/2007_08/0803_482_8830.htm
The V magnitude of the target star TYC 5132-01307-1 is about 11.5 mag and the maximum duration of the occultation is expected to be about 5 seconds with a drop in light from the star of about 1.7 magnitudes. The position of the star is: RA 19h 02m 05s, Dec -02d 32' 52"
For anyone on or near the predicted track, the chances of witnessing a positive event are about 25%. Given the positional uncertainty, observers anywhere in central, southern England including the West Country and Cornwall, and South Wales may be able to see the occultation. Please observe if the weather is clear, timing the start and end of the event as accurately as possible. Reports of observations should be sent to Andrew Elliott (email: ae[at]f2s.com), Occultation Coordinator of the Asteroids and Remote Planets Section.
