About this image

Ian Sharp continues to produce amazing images during his stay in southern Spain.  This is M42 and the Horse Head region of Orion, taken using an astro modified Canon 6D and Williams Optics WO71 F/4.9 APO Refractor.

The image was captured in one sequence during one clear night on 12th January. The main exposures are 60 x 240 seconds giving a total of 4 hours of exposure. Ian comments that he is amazed at the
depth considering this relatively 'short' exposure time. He had expected that he would need data over many nights, but doesn't think additional exposures would add much.  He also took 10 minutes of 30 and 15 second exposures which he blended into the very center of M42.

Equipment used was Losmandy G11 mount, Autoguider Scope: Pentax 75mm APO. Autoguder CCD: SX Lodestar.
Images were calibrated using Bias, Darks and Flats in PixInsight.  Main image processing was in PixInsight.
Layer Masking M42 core in Photoshop.
