Title
High Quality Methane Band Imaging with Smaller Scopes
About this image
Martin Lewis has been using a new ZWO ASI224MC camera for imaging Jupiter. The low noise and high sensitivity of this camera, especially in the IR, as well as being capable of supporting gains of up to 1000x, larger scopes can now image Jupiter with much shorter exposure times than was previously the case. Whereas before 0.5secs was not an unusual exposure time for methane imaging, an exposure of less than 50msecs can now be used helping to freeze the seeing and so allowing far more detail to be seen then was the case before.
This methane image, using a 444mm DOB, compares favourably with some of the best Jupiter methane images ever taken of the planet. A good image from the professional set-up with the 1m Pic du Midi is shown alongside Martin's image for comparison.
