About this image

The project to capture the image began with a planned visit to the Centro de Observação Astronómica no Algarve https://www.coaa.co.uk (COAA).  Situated in the hills of Poio, near Portimão in Portugal, and facing south, the observatory has a latitude of 37o11’25”.  Mars was low in the sky with an altitude of 29 degrees but higher than in the UK.

To capture this image of Mars we used the 0.5M newtonian telescope at COAA with a Celestron Luminous 2.5x Barlow to give a focal ratio of f/11.  Using a Skyris 618 colour camera and IR blocking filter a 10 minute movie at 60 frames per second was recorded.

The image was captured as a 36,017 frame AVI file at 60fps.

The movie was cropped and reduced to the highest quality 3,000 frames using PIPP.

The image was stacked and processed in RegiStax with final processing in PixInsight
