About this image

The California nebula (NGC 1499 in Perseus) is well placed now the clocks have fallen back. I personally think it looks like a large pink squid. A real challenge visually, it is straight-forward with a telephoto lens, or a wide field telescope as used here. The bright star illuminating the hydrogen is Xi Persei (mag 4.4). Try to lose the star if attempting a visual observation.
