Moon, Jupiter and Galilean moons

About this image

I always like to take shots of celestial conjunctions if I can and the weather is kind. This one was particularly good due to the attractive 16 per cent lit crescent Moon but also because the four Galilean moons of Jupiter were spaced out either side of the planet, meaning I could capture them with my camera. It felt somewhat surreal to think that three of the Galilean moons are in fact larger than our own Moon but when viewed from such a distance away they appeared as mere specks of light. I was pleased with the way the image turned out as it was tricky to get the right exposure for both the Moon with earthshine and Jupiter with its moons.
