About this image

There are now three novae simultaneously visible near the centre of M31. In this image the general light of the galaxy has been subtracted using a median estimator with radius 10 pixels. The latest nova to be discovered is very close to the core of the galaxy. I picked it up whilst blinking images this evening and got quite excited before I realised that it had already been discovered! The full size image is here.

Early in his career, Halton Arp cut his teeth by observing novae in Messier 31 using the 60" and 100" on Mt Wilson (as directed by Edwin Hubble I think). I am not sure how many he found but I think around 150, and calculated the rate as being 26+/- 4 per year. Three at once ain't bad!
