Noss Head Aurora Nightscape

About this image

Panorama captured from an aurora display observed by Caithness Astronomy Group members on 13th October from Caithness in northern Scotland.

The image shows Noss Head lighthouse and an active display of the northern lights both reflected in a peaty lochan. This was taken a few hours after our encounter with "Steve" (see separate post). It is a panorama produced from stitching together two images, thus allowing the lighthouse to be captured alongside the full extent of the aurora. It was a fabulous way to end a night of stargazing.

Image capture and editing details.......
  • The images were taken with a tripod mounted Canon 760D DSLR and 10-20 mm Sigma lens set at 10mm focal length and f3.5 aperture. Adobe Lightroom v6 was used for the image editing.
  • Exposure settings for the panorama was 13 seconds at ISO 6400. The high ISO was necessary to keep the exposure time short enough that the scene had not changed too much between exposures, thus making stitching feasible. Even doing this I found that the aurora had changed a little and as a result stitching the 2 mages proved tricky. Lightroom refused to combine the 2 shots, however I found that Microsoft Image Composite Editor did the job well.
