About this image

The Hoba meteorite was discovered around 1920 and at that time weighed around 66 tons. Subsequent weathering and 'shrinkage' due to sampling by international expeditions and other vandalism have reduced this to 60 tons today, when it is a protected national monument. It is unclear how it survived entry through the atmosphere without breaking up - best guess is that it was at a very shallow angle and decelerated to terminal velocity. There is no crater.
