About this image

These images with the same instrument, same scale and both processed in the same way show the expansion of the coma of 174P following its outburst. The coma has grown from a diameter of 23 arcsec yesterday to 30 arcsec this morning. The comet is currently 6.4 au away and so 30 arcsec corresponds to a physical diameter of 140,000 km and an expansion of 7 arsec corresponds to an expansion velocity of around 170 m/s.
