About this image

In the early hours of the 22nd September 2015, the perigee Moon, Earth and the Sun moved into a perfect alignment to create a total lunar eclipse.  Over a two-hour period the shadow of the Earth increasingly moved across the moon.  At total eclipse, light from the sun passed through the Earth’s atmosphere scattering the blue light.  Only the red light of the sun dimly reached the moon to create a very dim blood red moon.

This image is a composite, produced in Photoshop, of different stages of the eclipse.  Each image was created from 25 separate images that were stacked to create a single higher resolution image.  The full moon image was captured at 1/250th second; f/14; ISO 200.  The eclipsed red moon was recorded at 1 second; f/4; ISO 3200.
