About this image

Excellent conditions for a change for a late-afternoon observation of Mercury. Minimal jet-stream and unusually good local seeing yielded a higher than normal percentage of acceptable frames: around 1.5% compared with 0.3% or so in the last few sessions. The quadrant of Mercury visible here has no prominent bright impact features. Kuiper is now a bright patch on the limb, highly foreshortened, and will soon rotate out of view altogether. The markings on the disc are fairly subtle tonal variations, which would not have been reliably seen in poorer conditions. However, the good seeing resulted in larger stack sizes and thus better image quality. The agreement between the verification images confirms that the markings are genuine, and there is a good match with a blurred Messenger image.
