Title

Mercury IR & red comparison, 29th June

About this image

After capturing the data for an infra-red image of Mercury on June 29th, I switched to a red filter to see if that would reveal any more details. Previous attempts at imaging with a red filter (610 nm cut-on) have shown less rather than more detail, so this time I added an IR-cut filter to restrict the wavelength range to 610 - 700 nm. A comparison of the original IR image and the red image is shown above, together with the same blurred Messenger image (which is taken from near-IR imagery). The red image clearly shows finer detail, which was an unexpected but welcome result. It is clearly worth making further observations with the new filter combination when Mercury is accessible again after inferior conjunction.
