Mars and the Milky Way July 2018
About this image
View of the Milky Way and Mars near perihelic opposition. Mars is nearly overhead from South Africa. I've always wanted to travel to the S hemisphere for a perihelic opposition, so I could view Mars overhead, and in 2018 I made that happen by visiting the famous Boyden Observatory. In addition to using the 13" Clark refractor for Mars, I took a variety of wide angle views of the Milky Way. This is a stack of 10 x 60 sec exposures at ISO 2500 and F/2.5. The images and 10 dark frames were stacked in Deep Sky Stacker, then moved to PhotoShop for final adjustment, which included levels, curves, and unsharp masking. Color and contrast adjustments provide a wide variety of views, some like this, others more subtle. This version is 720x551 pixels - original is 7200x5400.
