Mercury montage

About this image

A montage of images of Mercury covering the nine weeks from the last eastern elongation in May 2018 to western elongation in July 2018. The images are scaled to the correct relative diameter, and located to represent the motion and changing phase of the planet over the period. One poor-quality image from June 22nd was omitted, as the left hand side of the figure was becoming rather too crowded. The observations span an interval of 63 days, slightly longer than the 58.6 day rotation period of Mercury, but because our direction of view has changed by 55 degrees in that time, there is no overlap of the features seen in the first and last views.
