I spent last evening with my family including my 8 and 5 year old granddaughters on the roof terrace (Daylight view to south shown)  with a very clear sky using the naked eye and my amazing TAL1 Russian Telescope (£40 on Ebay a few years back) - fairly easy to get up the spiral staircase! We started with Saturn - the rings clearly visible around a central globe then went on to Jupiter with 2 moons on each side of the planet, Venus with its 57% phase clearly visible to them - then Mars - intensely red with dark markings and very bright. My 8 year old granddaughter was particularly interested and we discussed the distances to the different planets and to some stars. She was able to look at Antares, the rival of Mars in Scorpius through the scope and compare its colour to Mars. The Milky Way was bright and I went through the usual back to back fried eggs explanation and tried to explain the different scales of the distance to Mars and the distance to the edge of the Galaxy to her. She was able to observe the double star Albireo in Cygnus with its orange and blue components and she became adept at spotting satellites passing over and distinguishing them from aircraft. A look at a few random concentrations of stars in the Milky Way finished off an eventful night of observing.
