About this image

This shows the observatory with the twin section roofs rolled somewhat open.  The roofs (one or both), are opened to the extent that provides a slot to observe through. As the observatory is aligned true north/south, an opened slot is east west and so solar system objects traverse in a general direction along the open slot which is very convenient. Usually the slot is only opened 2 - 3 feet. If the whole southern sky is required, the southern roof is rolled totally off. Ditto for the northern roof and the northern sky.   Otherwise the slot is adjusted as required.
