Title
Passing by! 38P/Stephan-Oterma passing the Eskimo Nebula this morning in Gemini
About this image
Yesterday I attached my unmodified Canon 40D to my Ritchey-Chretien 8-inch, replacing the SBIG ST-9XE. Last night it was pouring with rain so I was unable to focus the telescope. At 4.30 local time this morning I switched on an outside light - completely dry as often happens here in Spain - it rains and then dries up almost immediately. I switched off the outside light and the sky was full of stars! I opened up the observatory roof and pointed the telescope at the Pleiades to achieve 'first focus' on this combination. I was then able to check how 38P/Stephan-Oterma was doing and obtained the image shown with the comet sliding past the Eskimo Nebula. (C39). It was quite windy but my superb Spanish run-off roof shed gave excellent wind protection. It was more comfortable than usual in the observatory because yesterday I managed to put in a raised floor by using my jigsaw to cut appropriate holes in the two appropriately sized pieces of wood to accommodate the tripod legs sitting on the courtyard tiled floor below. I am glad I did not put in the usual buried concrete slab - there is no need. The telescope maintains perfect pointing on its tripod since I did a 120 samples T-Point run. Also having the Ritchey-Chretien is so much better than the SCTs I own which need constant focusing due to temperature changes. This carbon fibre telescope keeps its focus!
