Beta Scorpii occultation by Jupiter 14 May 1971

About this image

Images taken 14th May 1971 (local time). At that stage I was 'snapping' images through the eyepiece of an undriven alt/az telescope using a 35mm SLR.

The first image shows both components of the double and the remaining two the brighter component only. The images are in this format because they were printed in the local newspaper. I remember the event with the stars flickering for several minutes, then dropping in brightness and flickering again for some time more before becoming very faint and being lost to view. Clearly there was a layering in the Jovian atmosphere but visual observations could not accurately record precise details.
