About this image

Mercury imaged in relatively good seeing, despite its altitude being only 23 degrees, thanks to a minimal jet-stream and (probably) the heating in nearby houses not operating in mid-afternoon. A total of 110,000 video frames was captured, and a final selection of just over 1100 used for the final image. This corresponds to 1% of the captured frames, which is a high proportion for Mercury. The image is rather more contrasty than a softened Messenger image, but the main features are in agreement with the spacecraft data.
