About this image

Mercury imaged during a series of experiments with longer focal length (using a 5x Powermate instead of the usual 3x Barlow). The seeing was average, so the use of an IR-pass filter improved the image quality compared to a red filter. The data was good enough to use a two-stage software selection and stacking procedure, which has yielded an acceptable image with reasonable disc detail. The apparent phase is less than the Messenger images due to contrast changes in processing.

The planet was a few days from elongation, but sadly I've had no opportunities this week to attempt pretty twilight pictures similar to those posted by others.
