About this image
I spent an interesting afternoon at Jodrell Bank yesterday. I was impressed by how visitor facilities have improved since my previous visit about 25 years ago, not to mention the great telescope which remains a superb engineering marvel.
I was lucky enough to meet Sir Bernard Lovell in the early 1960s. We lived in the district and his daughter, Judy, went to the same school as my then girlfriend. We were invited to a birthday party at the Lovell's home in Goostrey. Sir Bernard appeared to offer a few fatherly words.
After my brother left home for university (1962), for some years my mother took in post-graduate students from the University of Manchester who were based at Jodrell. I remember especially Dr Wilf Donaldson and Dr John Ferriday (as they later became). I have often wondered if they pursued careers in radio astronomy ....?
All in all, it was a highly rewarding visit.
