The Eagle Nebula in Serpens

About this image

Lying some 7000 light years away in Serpens, M16 is both a star cluster and a glowing nebula of ionized hydrogen. At its centre are the famous ‘pillars of creation’. The pillars are several light-years long, so would easily stretch from our solar system to our nearest stellar neighbours in the Alpha Centauri system.
