About this image

The California Nebula (NGC 1499) is located 1,000 light years from Earth in the constellation of Perseus, and it sits in the Orion arm of the Milky Way along with our solar system.  It got it's name because the outline resembles the state of California in the United States.  This narrowband image by Nik shows very well the various areas of this fascinating object.
