About this image

Messier 82, about 12 million light years distant from us, is what is known as a starburst galaxy.  It is also known as the "Cigar" galaxy due to its appearance to the naked eye in a telescope.  It is much smaller than our galaxy, at only 19 thousand light years across, but it is five times more luminous and has an incredibly bright core. The emanations of material from the core are best captured in Hydrogen alpha "light" and Geof has achieved this very well in his image.
