About this image

Messier 81 is also known as also known as NGC 3031 or Bode's Galaxy. It's a super example of a classical spiral galaxy and is located 12 million light years away in the constellation of Ursa Major. With low to moderate magnification in a medium sized telescope you can see it nicely paired with Messier 82, which appears as a thin line compared to the larger aspect of M81. M81 is about half the size of our own galaxy and Geof has captured it nicely in this image.
