Hi David,

Nice spectrum of the supernova. To calculate the line of sight expansion velocity, don't forget to include the galaxy redshift in the calculation. NED is a good source http://ned.ipac.caltech.edu/byname?objname=NGC%203643&hconst=67.8&omegam=0.308&omegav=0.692&wmap=4&corr_z=1 So the wavelength of the Si II absorption line is actually bluer than your measurement by the redshift of the galaxy. This will make your expansion velocity even higher!
