About this image

A rare Ring galaxy that looks like a planetary. It was discovered in 1950 by Arthur Hoag who thought it was a planetary nebula at the time. It is in fact a galaxy. A nearly perfect ring of hot blue stars circles the older yellow nucleus of the galaxy. 600 million light years away in Serpens. Probably formed from a collision with a smaller galaxy.
