Venus: 25th May and some experiments

About this image

Drawing of Venus made on 25th May using the W21 orange filter.  In recent days I have spotted some illusory cusp extensions which seem to arrive when viewing the planet with powers greater than x100 in poor seeing- the cusps don't come to fine focus in these conditions and can in a light sky make it appear as if extensions are present.

After experimenting with filters I found that the W21 orange filter helped to reduce the effect and that powers of x60 or so were adequate enough to see the thin crescent.  I will write a little more about this in the next issue of Messenger which will be released in the next week or so.
