About this image

I was always intrigued why we get solitary sunspots as I always thought they should appear in pairs with different polarities.

Dr Lucie Green just answered my query: The magnetic field in the photosphere needs to be quite strong to enable a sunspot to form. When two opposite magnetic polarities appear in the photosphere one polarity is often strong enough to form a spot and the other too weak so only one spot forms. So now you know why we sometimes get single sunspots!
