Nebulae in Orion

About this image
There are forty two Nebulae in the constellation of Orion.

Equipment used:- Stock Canon 40D with 50mm f/1.8 lens wide open mounted piggy-back on Meade LX-90 8" telescope fitted to its field tripod by an equatorial wedge. Telescope polar aligned. LX-90 Periodic Error Correction enabled. Dew Removal straps fitted to telescope and camera lens and operating. Telescope driven and manually guided. Telescope and camera powered by Mains Power.

Exposure details:- Fourteen sub-exposures each 5 minutes long taken at ISO400. Ambient temperature was minus 3 degrees Celsius.

Processing details:- After quality control 13 sub-exposures calibrated with Dark, Flat-field and Bias master frames before being combined and processed in Images Plus. Noise reduction and sharpening performed in Photoshop CS5. North is at the top.

Narrative description:- Five days after New Moon, the Moon had already set before imaging commenced. The weather was cold; clear with light dew that gradually worsened as the night went on. This image was taken in an attempt to record Barnard’s Loop on an unmodified digital camera, my only previous successful attempt being with a camera loaded with Kodak Elite Chrome transparency film. Although the Canon 40D was unmodified it has recorded Barnard’s Loop and the image also shows the Orion Nebula (M42/M43), the Running Man Nebula (NGC1977), the Flame Nebula (NGC2024), the Horsehead Nebula (IC434/B33) and the Witch’s Head Nebula (IC2118).
