About this image

Good seeing according to the weather sites. I discovered the focussing tools in SharpCap and they helped a lot.

That's a very nice image, Jim, and importantly you've resisted any temptation to over-process it.

I look forward to seeing more of your results.

Thank you, Chris.

I have a question for you if you don't mind. I am currently using a camera with the colour version of the sensor "178C". They also do a mono "178M". What, if any, benefits would the "M" version have for me when taking images such as this one? (I see that you use a mono camera.)

Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim,

The benefits of a mono camera are that the image resolution is slightly better, other things being equal, because each pixel contributes equally to the image. You can take colour images with a mono camera but it's more complicated, because you have to capture red, green and blue images, colour them separately and then merge them. As you've found, you can take mono images with a colour camera, but the resolution is probably not quite as good as it would be with the mono version.

Whether it's worthwhile for you to buy a mono camera depends on what type of imaging you plan to do, and whether such a camera would make a significant difference. My own preference is to try and extract as much as I can from each piece of kit before acquiring something new, but you may feel differently. I'd say you're doing pretty well with what you currently have, so it may be best to keep going with that for now.

Hope this isn't too vague to be helpful!

Chris
